My old granda knew about those canadian soldiers, told me aboot them.
Said they only ended up at Ibrox cos they were making noises aboot wanting to know where they could fight the hun.

And they never even went to France, Bill Struth was boring them and they fucked off to the pictures.

The irony about their post is that of all Scottish teams (including celtic) Rangers were by far and away the least affected by the war effort. Whereas most teams were depleted as players got called up Rangers players quite conveniently found relative cushy jobs for their players in the docks and shipbuilding whereas teams like celtic had loads of players shipped out to fight the war itself. The irony being that Rangers, the so called loyalist club, did less for the war effort than Celtic (or any other scottish team for that matter) and is a significant factor in them having dominating football throughout the war and after while celtic went into decline for a decade or more.

So the Rangers fans assume that since the Canadians never turned up again at Ibrox, they must have died??

Isn't it a bit more likely that if they survived that hell of bullets, shells, and mates being blown up all around them, they might have just decided when it ended, to like, go home instead?

I suspect that the problem lies with the fact that they believed it simply because a brother/fellowbear etc., etc., told them.

Will be showing my old boy tomorrow and my son as well.

When my Dad took me to my 1st game all those years ago i will never forget the reaction of the bears around him when he told them it was my first game.

scarves tied to each hand they all patted me on the back and one of them said - you will never want to leave after today son.

it was only later that i learned that my dad didnt know any of them - i thought they were his best mates the welcome they gave me.

Brothers in Arms indeed.

My son experienced more of the same on his 1st game and i kid you not - i felt as if i was part of a never ending loyal and beautiful yet unspoken tradition.
